Shakespeare In The Park Lineup Announced For 2009

The Public Theater has announced its lineup for this year’s Shakespeare in the Park festival and it features a star turn by Academy Award Nominee Anne Hathaway as she makes her Public Theater debut playing Viola, one of the canon’s most charming heroines. Taking charge of this time-honored story of cross-dressing and mistaken identity, all in the name of love, is Tony Award winning Director Daniel Sullivan.

The second feature of summer 2009 features JoAnne Akalaitis returning to The Public Theater to present Greek tragedy as it was always meant to be seen – in the open air of the city. This visionary interpretation, featuring a lush choral score by Philip Glass, re-imagines the classic story about what happens when a government attempts to outlaw desire.

Lowest Temperature In Central Park History

Tomorrow, February 9th, will mark the 75th Anniversary of the coldest day in Central Park history.

Today’s temperature reached a balmy 56 degrees in the park. And we hope you enjoyed it. In any case you certainly enjoyed it more than the park goers on this date 75 years ago. It was on February 10th in 1934 that the following headline appeared in the New York Times:

Mercury 14.3 Below Zero On New York’s Coldest Day; Six Dead and Hundreds Treated for Frostbitten Ears and Noses — 8 to 10 Below Due Here Today. THE FREEZING WEATHER CAUSES A MIST IN THE HARBOR. 14.3 BELOW ZERO ON COLDEST DAY

It marked the coldest temerature ever recorded in Central Park.
