Central Park is just as lovely place for animals as it is for humans (ever see a mopey squirrel?) and a walk in Central Park can be the perfect way for both owner and pet to enjoy a summer afternoon or evening. There are, of course, certain rules that need to be observed to make sure the experience is just as enjoyable for everyone using the park.
First there are the animal laws that are in effect throughout New York City. Most are fairly obvious (no bears, for instance); these can be found at the Animal Care and Control of New York City website.
Central Park also has its own set of rules, as might be expected almost all of these concern domestic partners of the canine variety. Again, most of these should be fairly self-evident:
– State law does not permit your dog to be in any public place without a leash (no more than six feet long). Leash laws are strictly enforced in the park from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm.
– From 6am to 9am/after 9pm, dogs can be off-leash in most of the park. However there are places in the park where this does not apply and dogs must be on leash at all times. These include: Arthur Ross Pinetum, Bridle Path, Cedar Hill, Conservatory Garden, Kerbs Boathouse Plaza, Shakespeare Garden, Strawberry Fields, Turtle Pond Lawn and Woodlands.
– There are also places in the park where dogs are prohibited. These include: Ball?elds, East Green, Elm Islands at the Mall, Great Hill Glade, Lilac Walk, Ornamental Fountains, Playgrounds, Reservoir Running Track, Sand Volleyball Court, Sheep Meadow and Water Bodies.
– Be mindful of your dog so that other Park visitors are not anxious about their safety. Only you know whether your dog is friendly or hostile to other people.
– Do not allow your dog to run and jump on other people, their children, or leashed dogs without an invitation.
– Do not allow your dog to drink from Park fountains, unless a special dog fountain is provided
– Please prevent your dog from chasing birds, squirrels, and other animals
– Remember that horses can be startled easily by sudden movements or noise.
– Please pick up after your dog and dispose of the waste in containers provided throughout the Park.
– If you brush your dog in the Park, place loose hair in a bag and dispose of it properly.
– Dogs are never allowed in playgrounds, display fountains, bodies of water reserved for wildlife, or on ball fields
