The celebration in New York City begins on Tuesday, October 4, when Petco invites adopted pets and their pet parents to attend the National Adoption Reunion event in Central Park and help set the Guinness World Record for the “Largest Gathering of Adopted Shelter Animals” in one location. The record to beat is 250 adopted pets.

The event, co-hosted by Sony and featuring a free concert by Sony recording artist Gavin DeGraw, will take place between 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. at the Naumburg Bandshell, near the East 72nd Street entrance to Central Park.

To participate in the Guinness World Record bid*, adopters must bring proof of pet adoption, such as their adoption agreement. Dogs must be on a secure leash at all times. If you bring a cat, rabbit, or other pet to the event, be sure your pet remains inside a secure carrier for the entire event. All pets should wear proper identification. Check-in begins at 4:00 p.m. at the bandshell, and the record-setting begins at 5:00 p.m.

Several Alliance Participating Organizations will be on-hand with dogs for adoption, so if you’re thinking about adding another furry member to your family, now might be the time! Sony will offer a special “Photo Experience” area where pets and pet parents can have their picture taken and learn how to take the perfect pet photo.

Petco’s National Adoption Reunion celebration continues on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9. Adopters are invited to come to a Petco location to celebrate with other happy pet families, to meet adoptable pets, or to simply stop in with their adopted pet to receive a free commemorative collar charm, while supplies last.

Adopters also can share their adoption stories online and win great prizes by entering the Petco National Adoption Reunion Sweepstakes. Visit petco.com/reunion for details and official rules.

*Guinness World Record Participation Guidelines
A minimum of 250 animals attending the reunion must have been adopted from an animal shelter or adoption organization and not purchased. In order to count towards the record total, all owners must supply paperwork to the event organizers proving their animal was adopted from a shelter or adoption organization. Check in to the record-setting attempt begins at 4:00 p.m. and counting begins at 5:00 p.m. To be counted in the record attempt, all animals must be in the same place at the same time in a cordoned off area and must remain altogether for a minimum of 10 minutes. Each animal must be accompanied by at least one pet parent. An official Guinness World Records ® representative will be in attendance to verify the record and share the result with attendees by the end of the event.
