Yesterday morning, at the height of the winter snowstorm, horse were forced to work pulling carriages along dangerously icy streets. This in complete violation of the law. When called at 10:00 AM the ASPCA insisted that the horses were not working. Donny Moss, the producer and director of Blinders: the Truth Behind the Tradition, was on Central Park South taking video. The ASPCA seems to be woefully out of touch.
More interesting videos: They show consistent overcharging – particularly now that it is the holiday season. The going rate is $34 for 20 minutes. There is no sales tax.Yet the drivers ask for a tax from unsuspecting tourists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSun_1Ly6ro&feature=channel
As a warning this second video includes offensive language – so beware. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbZR4FZZQRM&feature=channel
I come from rural Pennsylvania and I have never seen animals treated this way. Leaving horses out in a raging snowstorm to slip along freezing streets is a crime. And it turns out that the drivers are overcharging people to boot!
My cab drove down Central Park South last night at about eleven. I was disgusted to see dozens of horses still forced to work in a frozen rain. New yorkers should be ashamed that this is allowed to go on in this city. This should be against the law.
I can’t imagine a more horrid way to celebrate the holiday season, watching an animal forced to work through such conditions. Hard to believe this is 21st century New York.
I brought my family to the park for a ride. We were charge $60.00 for half hour ride. Why is this not regulated?
Anyone else want to make up a name and comment against the cariages? Horses live in the WILD ya know! They are ANIMALS! you people dont know the first thing about horses or their abilities.DUH.You are all so pathetic. Grasping at straws much? Youre bill will go down in flames and we will get the raise. Ill be laughing in you faces as we walk out of the city hall.
Well obviously they have the ability to endure suffering. I just hope they don’t have to listen to you speak as well. Ouch.
Never ending suffering for these poor NYC carriage horses. NO oversight and NO compassion in NYC
All the horses looked perfectly relaxed and happy to me, and in very good condition, and I deal with horses everyday. Most had blankets on when waiting, but the horse will overheat if blanketed while working. I would assume that the drivers had jackets etc as they would get cold as they are not doing any physical work. I did not notice any of the horses struggling on “icy slippery streest”, they all seemed to be very sure footed. I would suggest that all those who are horrified do a bit of research on horses before commenting on how creul this is.
Hey, Mary, Im not a typist, but YOU are an ignorant ass. You want to see sffering, how bout going to a horse slaughter house in Mexico? Our horses are fined and loved.
These horses are suffering. I saw some that looked like they had icicles on them. The streets were icy. If that’s not bad enough, what about the drivers overcharging and lying about the sales tax. It’s disgusting.
Well Susan, your reply is certainly well thought out. It is odd though that you seem to display the endemic dyslexia of all supporters of the Carriage Horse industry. But, I’m sure it’s just a coincidence. It’s not as if all of you people have trouble spelling. But I am curious. You say you work with horses everyday. Where? And you just happened to take off from your daily job with horses, in New York City, to observe them during a snowstorm. Right.
Not a typist, Makupaname (are you Samoan?). I guess that means you’re blaming your hand eye coordination for the fact that you can’t write a single thought in intelligible English. I also admire your moral relativism, the point being if you can find someplace else on the planet that they treat animals worse it justifies their abuse here. I get the feeling that a lot of slave owners felt the same way. Well, at least you spelled ignorant correctly. Bravo.
You people are all the same. Any one with a different opinion than yours is labeled this or that. If you KNEW anything about horses you wouldnt be saying the stupid things you say. How much do you people actually know about horses? Have you ever even been to a horse farm? Its pointless to argue with people like you who cant back up thier points bc they dont know anything about what they are saying in the first place! I HATE NYC bc of people like YOU! Every time I come back from now on I will take a ride and I will tell all of my friends to do so as well.
