Hurricane Irene swept through Central Park early Sunday morning with winds and heavy rain, uprooting at least 25 trees, downing thousands of branches and flooding paths.
More than 50 Conservancy crew members and tree contractors responded to the damage during and after the hurricane. Flooded paths were pumped to nearby catch basins, and in less than 24 hours after the storm’s conclusion, crews had removed the fallen trees and leveled their stumps. Over the next week, the Conservancy will continue the clean-up effort, including tree work and clearing, safety inspections, and assessing other damage sustained by the Park.
