Another of Central Park’s many hidden wonders is Lasker Pool. Here you can find relief from New York’s sometimes oppressively hot, and humid summers with a dip in cool waters. And, unlike too many of New York’s most attractive seasonal diversions, admission is free.

Lasker Pool was built in the 1960s and occupies a magnificent upper Park site at the end of the Loch and overlooking the Harlem Meer. Constructed with the generous contribution of the Lasker Sisters it was not built without a bit of controversy.

Some New Yorkers opposed its construction because it took up a corner of the Harlem Meer and they felt that any change to the original topography of the park was a desecration. In the end though it was built, and two generations of hot, sweaty, Manhattan youths are grateful. It is also easy to locate during the summer months, just follow the easily identifiable sounds of water splashing and children laughing.
